BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION HONORED FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY EFFORTS
Group receives 2006 Chairman's Award from GTSC
Commissioner Nancy A. Naples of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today announced that the New York State Broadcasters Association has been awarded this year's Chairman's Award for an organization by Governor George E. Pataki's Traffic Safety Committee.
The Broadcasters Association uses grant money from the GTSC to pay for the production, distribution and airing of traffic safety messages. Member stations of the Broadcasters Association provide their unsold commercial time to the Broadcasters, which in turn, make it available to GTSC for airing safety messages.
"Through our valued partnership with the Broadcasters, the GTSC gets its traffic safety messages out in prime time to nearly every radio and TV station across the State," Commissioner Naples said. "More importantly, this monumental task is done, in one of the most expensive media markets in the world, at a fraction of the cost, and truly our partnership with the Broadcasters Association is paying remarkable dividends that the GTSC could not have achieved on its own. I applaud the Broadcasters Association for everything they do on behalf of the motoring pubic."
Throughout the years, a number of award winning traffic-safety spots have been produced and aired under this partnership, from the "Lights are Red – Kids Ahead" ad from the fall of 1998 to last summer's innovative motorcycle safety ad, "Little More Than a Glance."
Commissioner Naples officially presented Association President Joe Reilly and Senior Vice President Dick Novik with the Chairman's Award at the New York Highway Safety Annual Fall Conference, held earlier this week in Rochester.
The GTSC coordinates traffic safety activities across the State and is comprised of 13 member agencies, including the DMV. The head of each agency acts as that agency's official representative to the Committee, whose initiatives include programs designed to promote highway safety. Commissioner Naples serves as Chair of the Committee.
